A new steel distribution and processing facility on Shoreham Port has received planning permission from Adur District Council meaning work can begin in earnest on the project, which could see 280 new jobs created.
John Parker & Son Ltd (Parkersteel) lodged a planning application in November 2007 for the development of the new facility.
Earlier this year Adur District Council backed the project but asked Parkersteel, its agent Cluttons and Shoreham Port to provide additional information relating to the development.
All three parties have worked in partnership and provided the required documentation to Adur District Council, which is now satisfied with the proposals.
Construction on the new facility is expected to start in the New Year, with the facility expected to be fully operational in early 2010.
Commenting on the decision, Guy Parker, Managing Director of Parkersteel said that he was delighted with the judgement and was looking forward to making a significant contribution to the local economy, whilst also being a good neighbour.
“We wanted to come to Shoreham because it makes excellent business sense and we’re fully committed to this project. We also want to play a part in bringing greater prosperity to the area.
“We are a fourth generation family-owned and managed business and we pride ourselves on being a responsible employer and a good neighbour to the communities close to our sites. We have excellent relationships with the people of Canterbury and at our other sites, where we employ over 500 people. We will be focused on becoming an equally considerate neighbour and responsible employer in Shoreham.
“Our new facility at Shoreham Port will allow us to transfer imported steel from ships to our facility, process this and then distribute onwards to our other sites and customers. We are really looking forward to completing the building work and opening for business.”
Shoreham Port Development Director, Peter Davies, added: "The council's decision to ask for further details was completely understandable but we were always confident of satisfying them. We're very pleased indeed that Parkersteel will be coming to Shoreham Port. This is another major boost to the port and the local economy."
