ADUR COUNCIL PLANNING COMMITTEE JUDGEMENT ON PARKER STEEL’S RECENT APPLICATION

All of the parties involved in the proposed development of a new steel store and finishing plant at Shoreham Port were pleased with the judgement by Adur District Council’s planning committee which agreed in principle to John Parker & Son Ltd’s (Parker Steel) planning application.

Parker Steel, its agent, Cluttons, and Shoreham Port, will be working in partnership to provide the additional information requested by the Council.

Speaking after the meeting, Guy Parker, Managing Director of Parker Steel said that the company was looking forward to addressing the concerns raised and making a significant contribution to the local economy, whilst also being a good neighbour.

“We want to come to Shoreham because it makes excellent business sense. If allowed to develop our new facility at Shoreham Port, which is already highly active, we will be able to transfer imported steel direct from ships to our premises, treat it and then pass it onto customers. As well as making sound business sense, by coming to Shoreham Port we will reduce truck mileage considerably, therefore helping the environment.

“We pride ourselves on being a responsible company and a good neighbour to the communities close to our sites. We have an excellent relationship with the people of Canterbury, where we employ 400 people at our head office. We will be focused on becoming an equally considerate neighbour and significant employer in Shoreham.”

Parker Steel’s agent Cluttons will be liaising with Enviros to satisfy the Council’s queries. Jeff Field of Cluttons addressed the meeting on 7 th January. “From the very beginning of this application we’ve acted as responsibly and transparently as we can. We had considerable dialogue with the Planning Department and the local community through our public exhibition. We will continue to act with same consideration and have asked Enviros to investigate the areas raised by the Council and to prepare a report. We’re confident that we will be able to demonstrate that the impact on traffic, visual effect, ecology, noise, air quality, flood and contamination risks of the proposed facility will be minimal.”

Shoreham Port Development Director, Peter Davies, said: "The council's decision to ask for further details with regards noise, traffic and environmental issues are completely understandable. We're confident of satisfying their queries and being able to progress with the development, which will help safeguard the port's future and generate some 280 new jobs."
